Important information about choosing synthetic papers

Many names are used to describe these materials. Synthetic Papers are also known as waterproof papers, permanent papers; Mylar ® , Revlar, Synaps are just a few of the brands available. Designed to be used on todays modern digital laser copiers and printers. Synthetic papers are used for applications that call for a robust and durable media with truly exceptional print quality. Synthetic papers are fade and scuff resistant, waterproof, resist blood, sweat, solvents and chemicals, wipeable, foldable, punchable, die cuttable, tear resistant and non-electrical conductive. However which type? There are several choices. Of course you want a 100% waterproof material with fade resistance, good archival quality, tear resistance and outstanding toner adhesion to withstand scratching. We have a variety of synthetic materials that will meet your needs. The choice comes down to rigidity, opacity, thickness, and, of course, price. Each material has a different feel and that alone, lends itself to different application requirements. We offer 6 different materials in our synthetics range. All are available in a range of thicknesses and sizes to meet your most demanding applications. Each material is described in more detail on the following pages, but for now, lets look at the rigidity of each and their relative cost. From the picture to the right you can see, PVC is the most rigid while Teslin is the least. Polyester and our PolyBlend are close but polyesters are more rigid and crisp, while PolyBlend has a softer feel. We know it is impossible to perceive what something feels like from reading this. To help, we have produced our Digital Synthetic Papers Swatch. The entire booklet has been imaged on our synthetics on Ricoh, Canon, Xerox and Konica digital printers. So what about price? Synthetic papers are expensive, especially when compared to ordinary paper. But thats not really fair, given the properties of synthetics and the cost savings over lamination, for example. Even so, there is a big variance between the cost of these materials that cannot be ignored. As you can see from the bar graph at the right, it shows the cost comparison between each of the materials. The comparison is based on a 10mil 12” x 18” sheet. Polyesters are the most expensive synthetic. They are also superior in many ways. That’s why you will see them used on many of the materials throughout this catalog. It is worth considering your options as your application may not need the superior quality and cost of a polyester. The most widely used synthetic for laser compatible products. You will see polyester used for many of our products throughout this catalog. Polyester has properties such as heat resistance, high strength, easy machinability, dimensional stability, tear resistance, moisture resistance, etc. Many refer to this material as Mylar or simply as PET film. Polyester feels rigid and crisp. The material coating is formulated to produce accurate color and monochrome copies from a range of standard office copying equipment. The film is coated identically on both sides of a white base to promote flatter lying.

If you use synthetic media you will, undoubtedly, be aware of the many synthetic stocks available in the market these days. Each has its ideal use but almost all suffer from a common problem:

STATIC

Static electricity has to be the number one issue we hear from synthetic users. Until Now! A new synthetic has been recently developed. This new solvent free plastic paper is a hybrid. As with other types of hybrids mixing several important properties together can have an interesting and commercially desirable outcome. Plastics certainly fall into that category. This new Plastic Paper is such a material. Offering the feel and performance of a high quality digital paper with the tensile strength, elastic properties, dimensional stability, tear resistance and moisture resistance, of its parents, but without the static that plagues the leading synthetic films. This material is very pliable in its thinner gauges and when die cut with a micro perforation, will tear with a soft smooth feel. This material is ideal for pre-perforated sheets in particular when used for plant tags, retail shelf strips and bound booklets. As this is a relatively new material we are still finding its place amongst the variety of synthetics currently available. One thing for sure is, with its static free property, the only thing this new material will be attracting is plenty of attention in a variety of markets.
